Emily is a fourth-generation Texan, whose parents were born in Donna, Texas, and LaMesa, Texas. Emily’s parents were migrant workers and taught Emily the value of faith, family, and hard work. She is the first in her family to graduate from college, (Michigan State University), and to receive a graduate degree, (St. Mary’s University School of Law).
As a devoted mother, Emily takes pride in raising her two children. Additionally, she considers her two furry companions, Chops and Romeo, her beloved fur babies. When she has free time, Emily indulges in her passion for sports, she particularly enjoys watching football and boxing.
Emily has enjoyed practicing criminal law for over 27 years and has successfully represented numerous high-profile clients. Emily has owned her law firm since 2001 and has managed running a law practice, raising a family, teaching all over the country, and trying complex cases.
In recent years, Emily has become increasingly concerned about the direction the justice system is taking, which is what motivated her to run for judge. Emily knows that with her experience and her reputation for being firm but fair, she can turn the 177th District Court around and ensure that defendants' cases are handled fairly and expeditiously. Cases that linger do an injustice to the victims, who deserve closure, to the accused, who are presumed innocent, and to the citizens of Harris County who elect judges to do the work of the people.
If you want an experienced, firm, and fair judge who will work hard to make sure that justice is served, then you should vote for Emily Munoz Detoto for the 177th District Court.
Experience matter, elections matter. Likewise, experience plays a crucial role in ensuring effective governance. This is precisely why I am running for Judge. I refuse to idly stand by while our county transforms into an unsafe environment for both us and our children. Harris County is rapidly changing, to the point where it is becoming unrecognizable. However, I have dedicated my entire legal career to the Texas Criminal Justice System, and I am prepared to take action.
During my time as a law student, I actively participated in the Criminal Justice clinic, gaining invaluable courtroom experience under the guidance of an experienced Attorney. Following law school, I was honored to accept a prestigious position as a Briefing Attorney at the Texas Criminal Court of Appeals in Austin, Texas. Moreover, I proudly served as an Assistant District Attorney at the Harris County District Attorney's office under the esteemed Honorable Johnny B Holmes.
Since 2001, I have been board-certified in criminal law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, a distinction that less than 1% of Texas Attorneys can claim. Unlike my opponent, I have successfully handled a wide range of criminal cases, from DWI to capital murders. Furthermore, I have shared my expertise by teaching trial skills across the country. As a result, I have earned a stellar reputation as a trial lawyer among Judges, District Attorneys, and criminal defense attorneys.
With my extensive experience and unwavering dedication to justice, I am confident that I am the right candidate for the position of Judge. Together, we can ensure a safer and more secure future for our county and our children.
Emily makes frequent appearances on the television show "Breaking Bond" on Fox 26 Houston, alongside Reporter Randy Wallace and Andy Kahan of Crime Stoppers Houston. Breaking Bond focuses on cases where suspects are accused of committing crimes while out on felony bonds.
